Heart Valve Diseases

Heart valve diseases include pathologies characterized by a valve failure, which causes a pathological alteration of the blood flow. Valvular pathologies can be determined by congenital, degenerative or infectious alterations. Congenital alterations can affect all valves at different levels and determine situations ranging from minimal clinical impacts up to very serious alterations that endanger patient’s life. Degenerative diseases of heart valves are determined by various factors such as wear of aging, dysmetabolic syndrome and genetic alterations while infectious causes are worryingly increasing in the population.  The WG of the Cardiology Network dedicated to Heart Valve Disease aims to study the main causes that lead these pathologies through an integrated and translational approach. In particular, since these pathologies are more and more within the population because of the ageing, is ongoing the OUTSTANDING ITALY study aimed to evaluate the outcome of current therapeutic strategies for severe aortic valve stenosis in the elderly population in Italy.  In the same direction, the study “Prognostic role of myocardial fibrosis evaluated with cardiac MRI in high-risk elderly patients with severe low flow low gradient aortic valve stenosis” aims to evaluate the predictive role of imaging and clinical parameters on the outcome of elderly, high-risk, low-flow low gradient AS patients undergoing TAVI.
